A flurry of new wind project announcements during the first quarter set new records for wind development, with Texas building more wind projects than any other state.

The Washington-based trade group American Wind Energy Association reported that developers announced plans to build new wind farms with a total capacity of nearly 6,150 megawatts during the first three months of the year, more than the total current capacity of wind generation in California.

The new announcements are in addition to the 17,200 megawatts of wind energy currently under construction in 21 states with Texas building the most at 6,500 megawatts, according to the association. Another 22,000 megawatts are under advanced development meaning they’re not yet under construction but have typically signed either long-term contracts, ordered turbines or are owned by a utility.
